So I’ve stumbled onto this awesome little app from Autodesk where you can create 3d scans from a series of sequential images taken of an object. I’ve been using it for the last day and I’m starting to get some good models out of it. Here’s a quick video which pretty much sums up everything about this program.
The interface is extremely smooth and easy to get a hang of. I feel that the Autodesk has really got it right with these ‘entry-level’ progams (there are 2 more to check out, 123D make and model or something like that). They have really considered the user interface and designed the program to make the process seem logical and completely non-confrontational; there aren’t a million icons plastered all over the screen with ambiguous symbols for individual operations.
Once I get some decent model results, I’d like to follow through and see how accurate the scans are and how useful the information is for 3d modelling. So far so good…..

So I’ve got this fascination with having a dedicated work/ studio space. I think it’s crucial to establish a space you have total control over, to be as messy or as anal retentive you want to be!
I think that setting yourself up an environment which is creatively conducive goes a long way in helping you follow through on those ‘what if I could…’ ideas. I’d be really interested in seeing other people’s spaces. I think I might have to do a blog post on my space as well, will probably be just the thing to motivate me to clean up a bit and get a little more organised, I digress…
Alongside the physical space that makers/ creative people occupy to do their work, I’m fascinated with what tools people have! I found this little video off Makemagazine’s youtube channel about the exact same thing. P.S this dude has an awesome sense of humour.
Entry level 3d printing at its most promising! My mind boggles at how simple this little machine is and how cheap it would be to set up, I believe it would cost around $300 to $400 if you did a little bit of shopping around for the right suppliers!
Assembly time is supposed to be around 45 minutes, and you should be up and printing within an hour or two of putting it together. I just think back to the long build time and the painful days and nights trying to get my Makerbot put together and working, and WISH this little beauty had been around then! Just look at the difference between the two! Makes the Makerbot look like a bumbling fool… Did I mention the build platform is HUGE (in comparison to Makerbot) as well as completely expandable!? That’s right, all you need to do is change the rods and belts and you’ll be good to go. The Printrbot+ is a good example of an adaptation of the design using laser cut parts instead of self-replicated 3d printed components. From what I can tell, there are only about 30 unique parts to this machine, all easily sourced locally and I think I might have to build one . No word as of yet on what electronics it is running on, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing a ton more about this little machine in the very near future. I’ll post up any details if I do decide to go through with building one as well as a documentation of the process
This project by Nortdlabs is shaping up to be an impressive looking open-source laser cutter. I’ve been following the progress for a while and I’m glad to see that it’s in BETA now. It’s really exciting to see something like this being done to such a high standard and with such a high level of precision. Shows a lot of potential in the personal manufacturing field.
It seems like a pretty big undertaking but the cutter has been designed to to use standard components. For those not aware, Australia has banned the import and sale of all lasers above 1mw. To get your hands on anything more powerful you’d have to jump through all sorts of hoops. As far as I can tell, one has been built here so will have to keep an eye out for any developments…
